Where did Loretta come from? For most of my life I thought my name was Leanne, because that’s what my parents would have called me. But then one day I realised that it really didn’t fit me so I went searching for my name.
Finding your own name is a funny thing to do. For most of us we name our kids or our pets. But we already come into this world with a name that our parents have given us. Choosing my own name was very much a feeling experience.
I didn’t feel like I had to stick with my boy initial so that gave me a full range of names. But I don’t think that made it easier. It was a big decision to walk away from leanne because I felt that’s who I would have been if I was a girl.
In the end I guess I’m only part girl. So choosing something else was appropriate. And like a lot of great thoughts I have, Loretta was discovered while I was riding my bicycle.
People have said to me “Did you get your name from the Beatles song? You know, Get Back? Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman but she was another man?” Um…. No?
Others have said that I’m like Stan in the Life of Brian. You know the inalienable rights scene? “I want to be a woman. From now on I want you all to call me Loretta.” Um…. No… but that’s the inspiration for the name of my blog now 🙂
Actually the inspiration for my name was Rosanna Arquette’s character in desperately seeking Susan. But wait wasn’t her name Roberta? Yes, but I didn’t like that name. I liked the way the three syllables sounded though. And pretty soon after I became Loretta.
